Open educational resources

What are Open educational resources?

Educational resources enrich our educational programs and the educational experience of our students.  Digital open educational resources in particular offer the opportunity for personalized education that takes better account of the individual student and contributes positively to their study experience, study success and well-being. The availability of digital open educational resources is an important success factor in being able to offer education flexibly.

The adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) has become a necessity for leading institutions of higher education in the Netherlands. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science also endorses and encourages this. It is therefore important to make digital open educational resources optimally accessible through a good infrastructure.

The University Library is the content manager of Erasmus University Rotterdam, and stimulates the application of Open Educational Resources.

In the coming period, the Library will focus on the following goals:

  • The development of policies for Open Educational Resources.
  • A shared educational vision on Open Educational Resources.
  • Organizing support for Open Educational Resources to stimulate use.
  • Ensuring preconditions for making digital learning materials available to teachers and students.

Npuls

Npuls is a national Growth Fund program of and for all public vocational schools, colleges and universities in the Netherlands. It works together to improve the quality of education, increase the agility of the education system and strengthen the digital skills of teachers and students.

The aim of Npuls is that by 2032, Dutch education will have a coherent service portfolio for digital educational resources that will enable teachers and students to compile and use an optimal mix of digital (open) educational resources from one national digital ecosystem. The Library participates in the working group within Erasmus University Rotterdam and thus contributes to Npuls.

SURF and Open Education

Through SURF, the ICT cooperation organisation for Dutch higher education and research, higher education institutions exchange knowledge and expertise in the field of open and online education.

SURF has Special Interest Groups (SIGs), with experts from the participating universities and universities of applied sciences, one of which is the SIG open and online education (Dutch only).

In 2023, the University Library conducted a pilot with SURF Edusources / SURF Sharekit.

SURF Edusources is the national platform for Open Content for education. In addition, SURF has a national support desk for open educational resources with the aim of helping teachers with the application of digital open educational resources.
