The Educational Resource Repository (ERR) is a repository built by the University Library that allows teachers to store digital educational material in the form of articles, book chapters, reports, and (law case) annotations to be used as course literature in Canvas courses.
As a lecturer you can use the EUR Course Literature tool to add educational material to the ERR and generate course literature lists in Canvas. This tool can be accessed in Canvas by clicking the Literature button in the course navigation.
Students can view a list of literature for the course by clicking the Literature button in the course navigation or view literature lists per module. The student simply clicks an item in the list to access the literature. Online items open in a new browser tab. PDFs open automatically in the Canvas PDF viewer. Optionally, students can download a PDF to their own device.
Educational material is often copyrighted so it's important to have permission to use the material and know about any royalty costs. During the process of adding an item to the repository a page/word count is performed to check if the material falls within the allowance of the Easy Access agreement.
Easy Access agreement
The Erasmus University Rotterdam is party to the Easy Access agreement which makes the reuse of copyrighted material in academic education much easier.
NB:
As of the 2023-2024 academic year, new conditions apply to medium length source inclusions in the Educational Resource Repository; 40 pages and a maximum of 20% of the original work.
The ERR is designed for registering and storing literature for which reuse is allowed under the Easy Access agreement. This means that you, as a lecturer can add a book chapter (up to 40 pages or 20% of a publication) but not a whole book.
The ERR calculates and reports the royalty costs for material that exceeds that allowance. You can give a reason for exemption, e.g. that the material is published in Open Access, or confirm the royalty costs. Most EUR faculties have a zero costs policy so you can also choose to cancel adding an item that incurs royalty costs.
More information (in Dutch) about the Easy Access agreement for Dutch universities is available on the UvO webpage, Easy Access-regeling (WO). The UvO Foundation also provides the Infographic Easy Access Agreement (WO) explaining the main points of the agreement.
Digital educational material
The page Educational resources explains copyright rules for the use of (digital) educational material in higher education in the Netherlands. The Dutch Copyright Information Points Network has created the website Auteursrechten.nl about copyrights in education.
