Sharing knowledge is part of our mission. More specific: Erasmus Center for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (UPT) has the mission to help current and future leaders in port, logistics and urban mobility make better decisions. We do that with high-quality research and education. For example, our experts are committed to SmartPort @ Erasmus.
Director Larissa van der Lugt: āIt is nice to see how our junior researcher Niels van Saase works as an account manager for the SmartPort @ Erasmus research community. In addition to conducting research for governments and companies, Erasmus UPT also has an academic ambition. Strengthening the research community in the area of ports is a good example of how we use our mission in our daily work.ā
Connecting people and knowledge
Niels van Saase is enthusiastic about his role in SmartPort @ Erasmus. āFrom now on I am committed to being an account manager for the SmartPort @ Erasmus research community at Erasmus University Rotterdam. This community has two main goals. The first is to bring together knowledge in the area of ports within the Erasmus University Rotterdam, so that experts learn from each other continuously and permanently. The second is to disseminate this knowledge to external stakeholders. As an account manager I am the link that brings the right people together. I am also actively involved in organizing knowledge sessions and other events.ā
Block Exemption Regulation
An example of the activities of Smartport @ Erasmus is the monthly Smartport Community Lunch meeting. At the first meeting that Niels organized, Larissa van der Lugt spoke with the participants about extending the Block Exemption Regulation (BER) in container liner shipping, a subject on which the European Commission will soon be taking a decision.
What is SmartPort @ Erasmus?
SmartPort @ Erasmus is a knowledge center that connects students, academics and people from the private and public sector. SmartPort @ Erasmus wants to develop new ways of collaboration and combine high academic quality with practical relevance to deliver research, education and project research. So-called 'port professors' are active in different disciplines at various Erasmus schools and join forces to tackle the challenges facing seaports. They also reflect on current developments from an independent point of view.
