It is with sadness that Erasmus School of Law has learned of the passing of Prof. Esin Örücü on December 31, 2023. Prof. Örücü was associated with our School from 1986 to 2005. From 1995, she was appointed as Professor of Comparative Law at Erasmus School of Law.
After her studies in Istanbul and London, Prof. Örücü was associated with the University of Istanbul from 1966 to 1976, after which she moved to the United Kingdom. There, she taught Legal Science and Comparative Law from 1976 and became a Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Glasgow in 1992.
In addition to her position in Glasgow, she was appointed Professor of Comparative Law at Erasmus School of Law from 1995 to 2005. Her dual role brought many benefits, especially for her students, who had the opportunity to undertake exchange visits between the universities.
Her comparative legal research is internationally renowned and widely cited. The significance of her work was last recognised in 2022 when the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL) appointed her as one of the Five Great Comparatists. Prof. Esin Örücü will be remembered as a dedicated and highly esteemed member of the academic community, an inspiring teacher, and an exceptional leader in the field of comparative legal research.
A funeral service will take place on Thursday, 18 January at 11:30 AM (GMT) at the Maryhill Crematory in Glasgow.
Our condolences go out to the family of Prof. Esin Örücü.
