As of 1 January 2025, Lieselot Bisschop has been reappointed as Professor of Public and Private Interests at Erasmus School of Law, part of the Sector Plan for Law within the focus area Rebalancing Public and Private Interests. At the same time, her chair has been extended to her field of interest Environmental Harm, providing her the opportunity to further research environmental harm, both as it relates to corporate and organised crime, its governance and its effects (on victims).
Bisschop has conducted and is in the midst of conducting several interdisciplinary and impactful research projects, including research from external grants, such as research on industrial environmental harms and governance like forever chemicals (PFAS), which has resulted in cooperation with investigative journalists and international research projects. Another ongoing research project Bisschop is working on is the NWO-KIC-funded project called Focusing On the Right Things in the Port of Rotterdam (FORT-PORT), for which the research team was awarded the 2023 EUR research prize.
The role of public and private actors with regard to environmental harm
Within the professorship of Public and Private Interests, in particular in Environmental Harm, Bisschop will continue to research the social organisation and governance of environmental, corporate and organised crime. She specifically aims to shed light on the experience of those affected by environmental harm and to contribute to criminological and regulation scholarship by analysing how institutional architectures have emerged and developed over time in cases of environmental (corporate) harm. Another key focus in Bisschop’s research is to advance the scientific understanding of “how public and private actors, individually and interactively, can play a role in developing solutions to these harms, building on insights from different disciplines and on expertise from societal partners.”
Bisschop on her reappointment: “I’m very appreciative of the trust and support I’ve received from my department (Law, Society & Crime) and the Board of Erasmus School of Law. And I want to thank my colleagues for embarking on research and teaching endeavors with me these past years, and for, hopefully, continuing those together”.
Rooted in society and academia
Bisschop’s multidisciplinary research approach to tackling (the effects) of environmental harms from the perspective of public and private interests, which is firmly rooted in both society and academia, perfectly fits the motto of Erasmus School of Law: Where Law meets Business.
The Board of Erasmus School of Law congratulates Lieselot Bisschop on her reappointment and wishes her all the best with her activities.
