Joost Nan appointed Endowed Professor of Criminal (Procedural) Law in Curaçao

Joost Nan, Professor of Criminal (Procedural) Law with a special focus on financial-economic criminal law at Erasmus School of Law, has been appointed as Endowed Professor of Criminal (Procedural) Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Curaçao (UoC) as of 1 August 2024.

Nan states: "This appointment broadens my legal interest in criminal law, and I hope to contribute to the independent development of criminal law in Curaçao. There are many interesting topics, and I plan to start by examining the Curaçaoan system of legal remedies in criminal cases, building on my Rotterdam inaugural lecture."

Nan expresses the expectation of advancing both education and research in the field of criminal law and, in this way, contributing to an independent criminal law culture in Curaçao. "I would like to emphasize the independent development of criminal law in Curaçao because – despite having a shared highest court, the Supreme Court – Curaçao has its own criminal law culture and should continue to have one," Nan said. He also mentions that he expects to learn much from Curaçaoan criminal law.

The inaugural lecture is expected to take place in the spring of 2025. In addition to his appointment as Endowed Professor at UoC, Nan will remain affiliated with Erasmus School of Law.
