Many of Europe’s leading economists will be meeting later this month for the annual joint Congress of the European Economic Association (EEA) and Econometric Society (ES) – EEA-ESEM 2024. The organising institution is Erasmus School of Economics.
Journalists and other economic writers and commentators are welcome to attend and experience first-hand how the economic research community has adapted to the unprecedented changes over the past few years.
Current issues of economic policy
The congress, which will run from Monday 26 August to Friday 30 August, will feature discussions of many current issues of economic policy, including the role of academic research in shaping policy, as well as the constraints that the political process and democracy impose on achieving the best policy outcome on areas such as climate legislation, competition policy and labour market reforms. Moreover, there will be an ECB-organised session on how fiscal and monetary policy have undergone large swings in recent times and the renewed interest in fiscal-monetary interactions such as the effect of fiscal measures on inflation during the recent high-inflation period, the effect of public debt and public investment on the risk-free rate, the pace of normalisation for monetary and fiscal policy going forward, the reform of the EU fiscal framework and its implications for the optimal mix of fiscal and monetary policy, the effect of the recent increase in the interest-growth differential for fiscal policy, or the conduct of monetary policy under a situation of high government debt.
Presentations by over 1200 economists from around the world
Many other economic issues will be discussed during the contributed sessions, with presentations by over 1200 economists from around the world.
Many of these sessions will shed new light on important applied problems such as green investments, online sales and advertising, cyber-risk, charitable donations, electric and hybrid cars, regional inequality, parental leave, gender equality, renewable energy, domestic violence, education, healthcare, immigration, refugees, ethnic minorities, political campaign funding, intergenerational mobility, student debt, air pollution, crime and policing, multinationals, public debt, pension fund financing, wealth taxes, inflation targets, financial market behaviour, trade mechanisms, and innovation.
Other sessions will focus on recent advances in economic theory, machine learning and econometrics, confronting fundamental issues in the modelling of economic problems, such as forecasting and policy evaluation, the aggregate and distributional impacts of inflation, and moral decision making.
