Introduction
Do you wonder how you can activate your students’ prior knowledge right at the start of a course or introduction of a new concept effectively? Or do you want to get insight in the initial situation of your students to adjust the design of your course or teaching accordingly? In this MicroLab you will learn how to activate and assess the prior knowledge of your students and which interventions you can do according to the level of prior knowledge of your group of students. You will analyze the initial situation of your students, determine the necessary prior knowledge and skills students need to participate in your course and you will develop your own assessment to assess students’ prior knowledge. Next to this, you will learn different teaching and learning activities on how to activate students’ prior knowledge.

Content, form and time investment
This MicroLab has a blended format, which means that you can prepare online and then meet (online) for a session with the trainer. In this session you will get more inspiration on activating prior knowledge, you can discuss your personal case with the trainer and share experiences with other lecturers from different faculties (depending on the number of participants). After the session you will experiment with activating and/or assessing prior knowledge in your course.
The trainer can support you in preparing or reflecting on this experiment. To complete this MicroLab, we will ask you to make a short video showing your activity or intervention and the results.
Earn an Edubadge
If you made the preparation and participated in the session, you can earn an Edubadge. This is a digital, visual certificate which you can share on e.g. LinkedIn. Interested parties can immediately click on the certificate to find out what you have done to achieve the Edubadge.
