Too much providers of shared bikes in Rotterdam

The municipality of Rotterdam wants to introduce a licensing system from 2020 onwards for the providers of shared bicycles. In Rotterdam there are between 2500 and 3000 partial bicycles available. Giuliano Mingardo, senior researcher Transport Economics at Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (UPT) gives his vision on the plans in the daily newspaper NRC.

At the moment, six different companies offer shared bicycles in Rotterdam. There may be a new supplier of shared bicycles. "From so many suppliers of bicycle bicycles in a small city like Rotterdam you will become a hell of a job," Mingardo says. According to Mingardo, the municipality should take a look at Antwerp, where only one provider is active.

The article about shared bicycles in Rotterdam, with the comments of senior researcher Mingardo, is available in the NRC of 25th February.
