The seaport monitor 2021 is now available. In the seaport monitor, the economic impact of the seaports is mapped out. The port monitor primarily uses three indicators: employment, added value and business locations.

The numbers

Direct employment in the Dutch seaports is 203,576 employees in 2020, a decrease of 1.7% compared to 2019. The total employment, i.e. direct and indirect together, is more than 354 thousand employees. Together they realize a direct added value of 27.2 billion euros; if we look at the total added value, it is 41.4 billion euros. This is a decrease of 0.7% compared to 2019. Looking at the share of the Dutch seaports in the Dutch economy, we see that 3.7% of employment in the Netherlands is related to the seaports. This has decreased slightly in 2020 compared to 2019. In terms of added value, the seaports contribute even more to the Dutch economy; 5.2% of the gross domestic product is related to the seaports. The share of the Dutch seaports increased slightly in 2020 from the share in 2019. The GDP of all sectors in the Netherlands decreased more than the added value in the seaports.
