Guiliano Mingardo is senior researcher at Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (Erasmus UPT). He has analysed the data of 8 shopping areas across Europe. He found that most shoppers travelled by foot! Compelling evidence showing that walking is good for the economic vitality of city centres.

Giuliano Mingardo on his research as presented on the conference Walk 21: “Pedestrian shopping areas are boosting the local economy of cities. Just look at big cities across the world. Madrid, London, New York, Brussels and Rotterdam; high profile areas are now pedestrian shopping and living spaces. Data shows an increase in spending and in leisure activities. If there is a pitfall it is the possibility that other streets and areas will become less attractive for the public. Therefore, an integral approach is recommended when changing urban areas.”

Rotterdam is this year’s host of the Walk 21 the 20th International Conference on Walking and Liveable Communities. Renowned scientists, urban specialists, politicians, health specialists will share their expertise and insights to create a better and healthier city environment. Giuliano Mingardo is a renowned researcher at Erasmus UPT and speaker on the subjects of parking, sustainable mobility and on behaviour and mobility.
