For the second time Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (UPT) provides a study abroad programme for bachelor students from Singapore. This year 85 students from the undergraduate programme Maritime Studies at Nanyang Technological University will follow the custom-made study abroad programme. Similar to last year, The Rotterdam Maritime Services Community (RMSC) is involved in the programme.
Academic Director Dr. Wouter Jacobs explains: “Unfortunately, this year we are not able to welcome the Singaporean students in Rotterdam, the Maritime Capital of Europe. However, we would not have the Rotterdam mindset if we were not be able to see opportunities in obstacles. We are eager to share our knowledge with the future Singaporean port and maritime professionals. Therefore, we renewed the academic programme to an online environment. In collaboration with the TU Delft, the academic programme is supplemented with an online interactive game, The Maritime Business Game."
Five-year extension
Based upon a long-standing cooperation, the port cities Rotterdam and Singapore have built towards a strong bilateral connection. Therefore, it seemed logical for Jacobs to further develop the academic programme and renew the programme to an online environment. “Over the past two years we have built a solid relationship with the Nanyang Technological University. Both universities are part of a port city and have their expertise in academic education of port and port management. We are proud that the programme is successful and will be continued for another five years. A great example of make it happen!”.
RMSC members share experiences
Jacobs: “The strength of the programme is the integration of academic knowledge provided by the Erasmus University Rotterdam and the profound expertise of the Rotterdam Maritime Services Community (RMSC) members. The true enrichment to the programme is the real life and business experiences of the guest lecturers.”
The 85 students will be following five courses from September until December 2020: Ship Ownership, Ship Management, International Maritime Law, Marine Insurance and Intensive Seminar Disruptive Scenarios. Connie Roozen, the president of the RMSC: “The subjects are really well connected to the practice of our members. It is great to be able to contribute to this programme and to share our maritime knowledge and experience.”
Jacobs: “As a university and as Rotterdam Maritime Capital of Europe we continuously strengthen our international relations with other port cities in the world through programme such as these. And what could be better than training young talent to ensure that our future ports are in good hands."
