What does this study entail?

The core of the programme includes:

  • Understanding the role of lawyers in relation to technological (ICT) developments in practice. 
  • Responsible handling of ICT and legal tech developments.
  • Exploring the possibilities and limitations of legal tech tools and their impact on legal practice, including insight into the technical aspects. 
  • The ability to design and understand legal tech tools. 
  • The importance of effective communication between lawyers and software developers. 
  • The necessary legal knowledge regarding Law and Technology.

Within the master's program, important issues are addressed, such as: What are the various approaches to regulating technological developments, and to what extent is regulation already in place? How should online platforms like TikTok handle Intellectual Property (IP) and data protection? Additionally, the influence of major technology companies (Big Tech) on fundamental rights and the sustainable functioning of the democratic rule of law is examined. The master's programme addresses the question of what limits society can set and what interests are at stake.

Ethical aspects of technological developments and professional ethics in a world where self-learning algorithms make government decisions are topics that receive attention. We provide insight into what happens behind the scenes of advanced technologies, such as Generative AI, and we discuss the regulations and practices related to cybersecurity and the integrity of technical systems.

  • Governance and regulation of technology: Here, you immerse yourself in the legal framework of digital technology, including key issues of regulation such as market regulation, software contracts, and liability. 
  • Law and data: You gain insight into the legal aspects of data processing, with a focus on data sharing and an emphasis on the protection of personal data. 
  • Ethics, technology & the lawyer: You are introduced to ethical dilemmas posed by technology and Legal Tech, including the protection of personal integrity as a legal professional. 
  • AI, democracy, and fundamental rights: You develop a framework to understand, critically assess, and manage the impact of technology on democratic processes and fundamental rights. 
  • Practical & skilled: Through activities like the master thesis, you gain an understanding of the workings of basic digital technologies and develop skills to effectively contribute to the development and implementation of Legal Tech applications. You collaborate with contacts from the legal practice to design solutions to their needs using design thinking principles.
