Students walk on campus in the fall

What does this study entail?

In the master track Governance of Migration and Diversity, part of the Public Administration master programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam, you learn to manage complex societal problems within the public sector, with a special focus on the contemporary issues migration and diversity.

This master track is part of the interdisciplinary GMD master programme, linking the University of Leiden, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam (including the Institute for Social Sciences in The Hague).

What is this master track about?

How to reconstruct a city centre? What are the opportunities for the management of migration flows and how to prevent discrimination and promote interaction and cohesion in culturally diverse societies?

In our globalised and complex network society these urgent questions need to be answered. In order to do this, experts who demonstrate analytical skills, connective leadership, entrepreneurial attitudes and a strong ethical compass to achieve innovative solutions for societal problems are needed. This master track in Public Administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam focuses on the research, analysis and management of societal issues.

Is this the right programme for you?

Migration and diversity are key factors in some of the most fundamental transformations of society today. These transformations do not merely involve migrants. Moreover, they have an impact on society at large. Migration and diversity have become highly politicised issues that play an important role in contemporary politics in many countries. These issues influence many different aspects of society, such as education, housing, labour and international relations.

This specialisation studies migration and diversity from an interdisciplinary perspective, addressing the different sides of this societal transformation. The programme provides students with a strong theoretical basis.

During the programme, the development of migration and the incorporation of migrant policies are studied.  Furthermore, the development of welfare state regimes, and how this affects issues of migration and diversity, is examined. You will learn to critically assess how policies have been developed in cities and countries across the world and how migration and diversity are discussed in broader political debates and in the media.

"Humanitarian migration triggered through wars and climate change, as well as populism and polarisation, are indications of a much broader transformation towards more mobile and more diverse populations. This master's programme brings together knowledge from various perspectives with a clear focus on the politics, policies and organisations that undergirds contemporary migration and diversity governance. This enables students to address issues related to migration and diversity in many different sectors, levels and types of organisations."

I realised I wanted to study migration only a few months before applying to the GMD master. I had little previous knowledge and expertise on the topic. Still, I wished to understand its structural causes, characteristics, and consequences, taking some distance from the politicization and polarization that distinguish public debates and widespread narratives on migration issues.

Following the Public Administration programme allowed me to analyse migration and diversity from numerous perspectives and disciplines, getting a nuanced and specialised understanding of its central concepts and domains of application. Studying in Rotterdam was exceptionally significant and fascinating because of the long migration history of the city, and following courses in The Hague, Leiden and Delft added new points of view and reflections to the picture.

Having the opportunity to go on the field, through site visits to the European Commission, Cordaid, and others, and talking directly with people who deal with migration daily gave me a concrete idea of these careers' priorities, challenges, and compromises. Most importantly, the fantastic community of GMD professors and students created a stimulating and inspiring environment, enriching theory with personal experiences and perspectives. Studying alongside other GMD students made me feel supported at all times and truly added something unique to the master's!

Within this cohort of passionate young professionals, I learned something new from each person that I came into contact with.

During my Human Geography bachelors programme, I began to take courses on migration, human rights, and racism. These courses really sparked my academic and personal interests in migration and diversity. However, that programme was mostly theoretical so I was left knowing about many problems within the world but not knowing how to address them. Therefore, the master programme’s emphasis on practicality and real-world skills was what attracted me most. This is also what lead me to change my discipline and follow the Public Administration track of the Governance of Migration and Diversity programme. Lastly, the very specific focus on migration and diversity was exactly the subject matter that I was looking to dive deeper into.

Throughout the master's programme, the multidisciplinary perspective helped to diversify our perspective. It also allowed us to tackle the issue of migration from multiple angles; historically, socially, developmentally, and through policy. In these courses, lectures by guest speakers and extracurricular programmes, such as those organized by the student board, I was able to get a better idea of what careers were available in the field of migration and diversity. I also really appreciated the insights and diverse perspectives I was exposed to through my peers. Within this cohort of passionate young professionals, I learned something new from each person that I came into contact with.
