Biography
Dr. Annie de Roo is associate professor of comparative law and dispute resolution at Erasmus University School of Law, Rotterdam.
She is inter alia director of the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) project Hybrid Local Governance in Multiple Social Domains, editor-in-chief of the ‘Dutch-Flemish Conflict Management Quarterly’, and has been key expert to the European Commission and to the Council of Europe on the subject of alternative dispute resolution at various occasions.
She also is vice-chair of the national Exam Committee Mediators Federation Netherlands (MfN), which is responsible for the quality, supervision, and organization of the MfN exams.
In her research she frequently combines legal and socio-economic approaches, the aim of which is to contribute to a profound understanding of the pros and cons of the wide variety of dispute resolution processes, including mediation.
This again is reflected in her teaching activities at Erasmus School of Law. In the international master course ‘Mediation Advocacy: Theory & practice’ the participating students are not only introduced to the basics of the mediation- and other ADR-processes through case studies and role plays, but also familiarized with the irreversible effect of the mediation-ADR development on law practice.
Among her recent ADR-publications is ‘Shadow of the Law or Shadow of the Settlement: Experiences with the Dutch Act on Collective Settlement of Mass Damages’, in: A. Uzelac and C.H. van Rhee, Transformation of Civil Justice. Dordrecht/Heidelberg/New York: Springer 2018, p. 249-266.
