From 22 to 24 March 2019, Ern Xu Seah and Sonia Vanzo (LLM’19) from Erasmus School of Law participated in the third edition of the AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot. The competition was held at the AIAC’s premises at Bangunan Sulaiman, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot is a training ground for students who intend to participate in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, which is the largest commercial arbitration moot competition. This year’s edition of the AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot was effectively the largest pre-moot internationally. This competition featured 91 participating teams with over 300 student participants. The participants came from over 20 countries, including Indonesia, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and South Korea.

In the preliminary rounds, the team competed against Dar Al-Hekma University, National University of Malaysia, University Teknologi MARA Shah Alam and Advance Tertiary College (Kuala Lumpur). They eventually qualified to the knockout rounds of 32 where they defeated Gujarat University. After a closely fought round with Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, the team exited the competition at the round of 16. This is the highest ranking that Erasmus University Rotterdam has ever achieved in the competition.

The team also won the Arbitration Chambers Award for the Honourable Mention for Best Memorandum (Respondent). Additionally, out of all the participants, Ern Xu Seah was recognized as the best oralist in the preliminary rounds and was awarded the Shearn Delamore & Co. Award.

The team would like to thank Piotr Wilinski, Julia Lessa and Warren De Waegh for their coaching and support. The team also expresses its gratitude to the Erasmus School of Law for providing financial support for this competition.
