Sharon Oded has been appointed Professor with an endowed chair of Corporate Compliance and Enforcement by the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The appointment takes place at a time of a growing global interest in the field of corporate compliance and enforcement, particularly by policymakers and multinational corporations.
Sharon: "Enforcement policy reforms enacted in the wake of various corporate scandals moved compliance up the corporate boardroom agenda. What excites me about corporate compliance is that it is a rather new and evolving area with growing practical importance to corporations. Through this Chair I wish to develop a richer and deeper understanding of the nature of effective enforcement and the shape of adequate compliance management."
The newly appointed professor continues: "This Chair has a clear business-driven orientation. The research will address current practical challenges occupying the top list of concerns of both policymakers and general counsel of multinational corporations. For instance, the research will focus on the effectiveness of corporate and individual liability regimes, the establishment of adequate compliance strategies within corporations, and effective detection, internal investigation and resolution mechanisms."
As a lawyer at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Sharon assists multinational corporations in establishing global compliance programs and addressing global compliance and enforcement challenges. Before his current appointment, Sharon was a research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of path-breaking book Corporate Compliance: new approaches to regulatory enforcement and publishes in leading academic journals. Sharon defended his PhD in Law and Economics on Corporate Compliance and was awarded a PhD cum laude, and the Erasmus University annual Elly Rood Prize for the best PhD research.
