As of 1 March 2024, Pim Jansen has been appointed as Professor of Economic Administrative Law at Erasmus School of Law. This chair is at the intersection of public economic law and administrative law and has a distinctively Rotterdam-centric focus on the subdomain of administrative law which governs economic activities.
Jansen is an expert in the field of economic administrative law. After gaining legal experience in the field of competition and regulation in Amsterdam and research stays in Tokyo and Cambridge, he obtained his PhD in 2018 with his dissertation From policy to law? Industrial policy under European Union law at KU Leuven in Belgium. Since 2019, Jansen has been active in the role of Assistant Professor of Innovation of Public Law at Erasmus School of Law. He is also editor-in-chief of Erasmus Law Review, programme director of the Togamaster and deputy member of the Examination Appeals Board (CBE).
Economic administrative law
Economic administrative law covers a broad spectrum of subdomains, from energy law to the regulation of digital platforms and from competition law to health law. It even extends to the public law dimension of industrial policy. This always involves the dynamic interaction between law and economics, market regulation and other modes of governance, and safeguarding socio-economic interests.
In his research and education, Jansen aims to delve deeper into specific themes and subfields of economic administrative law and contribute to a more fundamental and systematic approach. Jansen emphasizes the importance of further research because contemporary social, economic, and technological issues are becoming increasingly complex, and the interaction between and mutual influence of government, business, and citizens in a dynamic and complex society regarding the public domain is multifaceted and ambiguous.
Think of pressing issues such as sustainability, the energy transition and acting in cyberspace, all in the context of economic actors. As the operationalisation of concepts such as industrial policy and strategic autonomy increasingly permeates public law, this integration adds complexity and relevance, especially in the context of European, OECD and broader international developments. These issues call for a reflection on existing administrative law principles and the development of innovative legal frameworks that emerge through the dynamic evolution of law in response to economic actors and the societal developments of today and the future.
Where law meets business
Jansen’s economic approach to administrative law is closely aligned with the ambition of Erasmus School of Law, which focuses on the development of law as it relates to economic actors and complex social issues. The school’s central motto reflects this interplay between law and society: Where law meets business.
The chair is established withing the Law & Markets Department, which is active in the field of law and economic governance. Focusing on the legal and societal challenges related to law for economic actors, the department combines multiple approaches to these challenges to develop new research perspectives and innovative responses.
Jansen about his appointment: "I am very honoured by my appointment. The chair in Economic Administrative Law offers me a unique opportunity to research economic administrative law further and integrate it into our education. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues, students and other actors withing the field of administrative law. In addition, it feels particularly fitting to hold this chair in Rotterdam; Erasmus School of Law, with its strong focus on the interaction between law and economics, provides the ideal environment for studying economic administrative law."
The Board of Erasmus School of Law congratulates Pim Jansen on his appointment and wishes him success in his work.
