Marc van der Woude re-elected as President of the General Court of Justice of the European Union

On 16 September 2022, Marc van der Woude, Professor of International and European Union Law at Erasmus School of Law, has been elected for the second time as President of the General Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Luxembourg. From 1989 onwards, Van der Woude worked for the former Court of Justice of the European Communities, since 2009 this is the CJEU. In addition to his chair at Erasmus School of Law since 2000, Van der Woude has had several positions within the EU-justice system.

The General Court consists of two judges per EU-member state, that are all appointed by their respective governments for a period of six years with the possibility of renewals. Van der Woude has been a CJEU judge since 2010. In 2013, he was elected as chamber President by his colleagues and in 2016 he was elected Vice-President. He has been President since 2019 and he will have this position until at least August 2025. 

As Professor of International and European Union Law, Van der Woude has made an important contribution to the development of competition law. In addition to his current role in Luxembourg, he gives lectures in the master course EU Competition Law.
