Lawyers to become better business partners through executive training

Managing a legal practice or acting as a business partner for clients can be a challenge for lawyers who have not learned management skills during law school. Through the new four-day Management for Lawyers executive course, offered by Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), the University of St. Gallen and Erasmus School of Law, lawyers can learn how to work more effectively with clients, acquisition and associates and within their organisation.

Law firms are challenged to better position themselves in a fiercer and more competitive market, but very few lawyers received management and business training to conduct their mandate and their profession as a profit-making organisation enterprise, says Joost Steevens MSc, academic projects developer at Erasmus School of Law.

7 areas of managing law firms

“This programme is unique because it focuses on management and business topics that are considered most relevant in a law firm environment at the moment, and is tailor-made for senior lawyers on a career path, junior partners, and other partners with responsibilities for clients, acquisition and associates,” said Steevens.

Seven areas of managing a law firm practice are covered in the programme: trends and strategy, organisation and business models, customer focus and business development, personality and leadership, risk and crisis management, accounting and finance, and communication and presentation.

Triple expertise in law and management

The programme is specifically designed to enable participants to optimise their potential and profit-making firm’s resources. They benefit from the experience of a law school, the academic excellence of two leading business schools and from best law practices. RSM Executive Education and the Erasmus School of Law joined forces with the Executive School of Management, Technology and Law (ES-HSG) of the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland because of its long-standing tradition of teaching business subjects with a focus on law practitioners.

“Understanding how business works is a very necessary skill, both to understand your clients as well as your own business, and to make it as profitable as possible. We combine academics from three great schools to give participants the very best learning experience. The schools bring in experience in the industry and the latest insights from business management science, to make the programme relevant,” says Hans Horstink, learning and development manager at RSM, who helped design and develop the programme.

The Management for Lawyers programme will start in Rotterdam in September 2019. The first two days of the course are on 27 and 28 September, and the second part will take place on 4 and 5 October.
