Recently, the third edition of the 'Dealmakers' event took place. The event focuses on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and is organised annually by the Juridische Faculteitsvereniging Rotterdam (JFR) from Erasmus School of Law and the Financiële Studievereniging Rotterdam (FSR) Erasmus School of Economics. A unique event, according to JFR chairman Joshua Kruithof: “Students from different studies and faculties can work together and thus experience that in an M&A deal, the finance side cannot do without the legal side and vice versa”.
During the event, 10 students with a legal background and 10 students with a finance background united their knowledge and skills. Together, the students examined the two sides involved in an M&A deal.
Exploring the financial and legal side in Amsterdam
The students visited Amsterdam, where they started the day at the investment bank Houlihan Lokey. Here they explored the financial side of an M&A deal by valuing a company from a fictitious case and presenting the final offer to the ‘selling party’. The group also visited the law firm Jones Day to learn more about the M&A branch of the legal profession. The day concluded with a network drink where Houlihan Lokey and Jones Day were also present to represent the financial side and legal side, respectively. With knowledge of both dimensions of M&A deals, the participating students left Amsterdam as true dealmakers-to-be.
