Christiaan Stokkermans appointed as Professor of Corporate Law

As of 1 May 2022, Christiaan Stokkermans has been appointed as Professor of Corporate Law (0,6 fte) at Erasmus School of Law. The chair within the Law & Business department is aimed at the societal context of legal entities, companies, and businesses within the department of Law & Business.

Stokkermans is an expert in the field of Corporate Law. He has worked in legal advisory for twenty-five years and was a solicitor and partner at Allen & Overy in Amsterdam until 2015.  Since 2019, he has acted as a deputy judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. In 2017, he defended his thesis Sleutels voor personenvennootschapsrecht and received his PhD degree cum laude at Erasmus School of Law. Furthermore, he has been involved with the Master of Corporate Law for some time. His research in the field of Corporate Law has led to many publications, like the article Naar een wettelijke verankering van de maatschappelijke onderneming in the monthly journal for Corporate Law, and the research report Oprichten zonder omwegen in which Stokkermans conducted research, commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, into digitalisation, and the tackling of fraud as game-changers for the establishment procedures of companies.

The business as a system

Companies and businesses are of great importance to their stakeholders and society as a whole, and vice versa. These systems interact with each other. Societal changes and needs affect corporate law at its core. As a result, subjects like Corporate Social Responsibility, the modernisation of legal entities, and digitalisation and the tackling of fraud have become priorities in the field of corporate law.

Interdisciplinary and impact-driven research

As Professor of Corporate Law, Stokkermans will be focused on subjects like the responsibilities in and around a business, the modernisation of the law of partnership structures, and – more generally –improving possibilities for corporate law to contribute to a better world.

Stokkermans is excited about his appointment: “I like to approach corporate law from a societal context, looking for ways to improve it. How do we give room to entrepreneurs, and how do we serve individual citizens and society as a whole? Colleagues and students of Erasmus School of Law are already working on this. It is a true inspiration to work in such an environment!”

This chair fits perfectly with the motto of Erasmus School of Law: Where Law meets Business. Businesses fulfil a central role in the economy and the lives of people. The law keeps justice in mind, also in the economic relations between companies and stakeholders.

The Board of Erasmus School of Law congratulates Christiaan Stokkermans on his appointment and wishes him all the best with his activities.
