Rotterdam has historically been a working-class city—a hub of labor migration and the cultural diversity that comes with it. A city known for its “no-nonsense, just get the job done” mentality. But who is actually doing the cleaning? This event aims to address that very question, together with local Rotterdam residents, students, policy makers and academics.

In the informal sector of paid domestic work, approximately 150,000 labour migrants are employed, a significant number of whom work in Rotterdam. However, due to their marginal position and employment in private households, they remain largely invisible.
This performance, created by young Rotterdam-based theatre directors Elena Mataix and Myrthe van der Staay, explores the daily lives and work experiences of domestic workers. It is performed by a culturally diverse group of experts by experience, including workers from the Philippines and Indonesia. The project seeks to emphasize the importance of equal rights for all types of labour, highlight commonalities between workers and employers, and spark a broader discussion on the historically undervalued nature of domestic work—work that is primarily performed by women, whether paid or unpaid.
Following the performance, a workshop will be held led by Dr. Jing Hiah, Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Joanne Swaan, theatre director from Stadstoneel.
