From Monday 20 June until Wednesday 22 June, the Spring meeting of the Common Study Programme on (Criminal Justice and) Critical Criminology (CSP) will be held at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. When it was established in 1984, the Common Study Programme was, as a collaboration between three European universities, the first EU ERASMUS Programme. Since then, it has been an influential meeting for and by students. The programme has grown over the years, and now consists of fifteen universities in Europe and the United States who alternately host semi-annual conferences.

The theme of this Spring 2022 edition in Rotterdam is ‘Globalization and its adversaries’. It focuses on the criminological implications of the process of worldwide economic and cultural interdependency. These range from the efficiency of ports and airports, which is increasingly waged against security issues, to migratory flows that are seen by some as a threat to national identity and welfare, but by others as an economic necessity for (Western) countries with an ageing population, and as a humanitarian obligation. Criminology’s international research master IMARC also emerged from this Common Study Programme.

With approximately 125 attendees and 40 presentations and workshops, participants will draw a more in-depth image of the truly ‘glocal’ character of our societies. Issues like colonialism and geopolitical tensions, international trafficking of illicit goods and services, (anti-)migration politics and the challenges of the open character of the internet will be discussed by various presenters from the different partaking universities. The student orientation of the programme enables students to train their presentation skills, discuss their work with peers, and attend other students' and scholars’ presentations.

We are looking forward to some great daytime and night-time discussions and social talk!
