In many places around the world mountains, forests and rivers have become designated legal entities, similar to corporations. Nature has the right to exist and flourish and to sustain ecological processes. Several decades from now, this moment in time might well be considered pivotal to the way the world treats nature. In her book ‘The rights of nature’ [Rechten voor de natuur], environmental lawyer Jessica den Outer tells the stories about legal emancipation of vulnerable ecosystems in several places around the world. In this lecture, she will draw from her insights from this book and her experience in advocating for a green future for future generations. This event is intended to bring together students and staff from Erasmus School of Law and Rotterdam School of Management to interactively examine the proposals presented. The event is funded by the ESL’s Sectorplan for Law on Rebalancing Public Interests in Private Relationships and RSM’s Sustainability Ethics & Sustainable Behaviour.
