The COST Action Platform Work Inclusion Living lab (PWILL) promotes international collaboration in the study of a more inclusive platform economy. In June 2025, the international network will meet in Rotterdam.
COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a European funding organisation for research and innovation networks. The COST Action Platform Work Inclusion Living Lab (PWILL), including scientists from Spain, Serbia, the United Kingdom, Poland, France, Italy and the Netherlands, is working together to build a pan-European interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary multi-stakeholder network, including policymakers and civil society organisations, to address challenges related to inclusion in the platform economy by mapping the impact of platform work on marginalised groups and promoting alternative scenarios.
Jing Hiah, Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Department of Law, Society & Crime, has been a working group leader within the COST Action Platform Work Inclusion Living Lab since 2022. She is organizing the upcoming international meetings at the Erasmus School of Law in Rotterdam. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasizes the value of international collaboration in scientific research, stating, "It exposes you to different ways of thinking and doing, which encourages a more critical approach to your own research."
She also highlights the unique benefits of participating in a COST Action, particularly the financial support it provides for organizing and attending different types of international meetings including seminars, conferences, workshops, training schools and fieldwork visits. These gatherings, she notes, foster personal connections with researchers from other countries working on similar topics, ultimately paving the way for meaningful future collaborations.
