What does this study entail?

The transition to a research university such as Erasmus University Rotterdam can be quite a significant shift. You will have fewer contact hours, more reading materials, and you are expected to work more independently, including conducting your own research.

The pre-master helps you develop the skills and competences you need to pursue a master's degree. The programme is designed to enhance both your academic skills (arguing, using sources and academic writing) and research skills (setting up a research project, conducting analysis and reporting your findings. You will also familiarise yourself with the most essential historical knowledge, models, and theories.

When you apply for the pre-master's, you already have to choose a direction in which you will specialise during your master's: Applied History or Global History and International Relations.

Bridging the knowledge gap

The pre-master helps you to bridge both the study load and the knowledge gap between your prior education and our master specialisations in History (Applied History or Global History and International Relations). In the first term, you will enrol in selected courses from the Bachelor History. You will become acquainted with cultural, social, and economic history and with the history of international relations to fully grasp the learning materials.

Is this the right programme for you?

Maybe you have completed an academic bachelor’s degree in a field different than history and miss certain theoretical knowledge. Or you may not meet all the requirements, for example after finishing a bachelor’s degree at a university of applied sciences (hbo). In that case, the pre-master History is the right choice for you. In this programme you develop the right skills to get access to one of our history master specialisations.

5 reasons to choose the pre-master History at EUR:

  • You will study with students from all over the world; this provides a stimulating peer-learning and international environment.
  • You will learn how to conduct historical research on contemporary issues, approach history from multiple angles and study phenomena in an international context.
  • Immerse yourself in an interactive programme with a personal approach and direct contact with our tutorial teachers.
  • Adequately prepare yourself for a master’s degree; you will get unconditional access to one of our master specialisations: Applied History or Global History and International Relations.
  • Studying in Rotterdam offers the experience of a vibrant city with a rich history and dynamic present, including many museums, theatres, festivals, providing many opportunities to build a professional network.
