The study programme in a nutshell

The pre-master History is a highly intensive one-year programme, preparing you for one of our history master specialisations: Applied History or Global History and International Relations. During the pre-master, you will already choose one of these specialisations. The programme focuses on three elements: theory, academic skills, and research skills. After successful completion of the programme, you get direct access to the master specialisation you chose in your pre-master; you receive an offer to enrol in the master's programme.

Duration of the programme

The pre-master programme spans one year, during which you are required to obtain 45 credits (EC). This offers you the necessary time to acclimate to the pace of studying at Erasmus while preparing for the subsequent master’s specialisation.

You will attend lectures and actively participate in tutorials. And, of course, you are always welcome to take advantage of your lecturer's weekly consultation hours. Expect to dedicate approximately 33 hours each week to reading and analysing texts, writing papers, and preparing presentations.

Teaching language

All the pre-master specialisations are taught entirely in English.

Course overview

Throughout the pre-master programme, you will take simultaneously one or two courses during each eight-week term. Each course includes a weekly lecture and a two- or three-hour tutorial group session.

If you’re preparing for the master specialisation Applied History, you will be enrolled in the course The Public Role of Historians in term 2. This course offers a more theoretical foundation for Applied History.

The theoretical foundation for the specialisation Global History and International Relations is found in the course International Business and Nations-states

In term 3, you will take a research seminar, alongside your other courses, where you will learn to conduct a small-scale historical research project independently.
