Applied History

The Applied History programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam emphasises the importance of a long-term perspective for developing sustainable solutions to global problems. You will explore how nation states often use history to craft narratives and identities that shape our everyday lives. By studying the development of various global histories, you will gain insights into how history is frequently constructed as a cultural, religious, social, or political narrative, serving to legitimise nation states, conflicts, cultural identities or world domination.

Global History and International Relations

The Global History and International Relations programme, allows you to approach modern history from multiple angles, examining social, economic, political and cultural themes in the past – and connecting them with contemporary developments. You will visit archives, museums, and libraries to search for journals, letters, novels, and protest pamphlets to construct your cases. Utilising a variety of sources, you will explore how the public sphere has evolved over time. Furthermore, you will learn how to employ a variety of interesting sources for your research, including paper archives, digital databases, oral history, and political documents.
