Transition from study to work with a disability

Career Services offers support to students with various disabilities.  Disabilities can vary and may include conditions such as AD(H)D, dyslexia, ASD, mental or physical health issues, chronic illnesses, fatigue or energy deficiency, visual, motor, or auditory impairments, joint problems, and dyscalculia. For us, an official diagnosis is not required.

The transition from study to work and finding a job that truly suits you can be challenging and exciting. You may have concerns and questions such as:

  • Do companies show interest in applicants with a disability?
  • Is it wise to discuss my disability with a potential employer? If so, how should I approach this?
  • What is my capacity to work, and can I work with my disability?
  • How do I find the right job amidst all the options available?
  • How do I create a good CV and cover letter, and what should I include?
  • What do I have to offer, and how can I present myself effectively?

Career Services provides extensive support to students with disabilities on various issues. You can reach out to us during your studies and up to one year after graduation. We can assist you with:

  • Determining your work capacity and needs when starting a job or internship
  • Discussing your disability with a (potential) employer or internship provider
  • Building self-confidence and gaining insight into your strengths, talents, and pitfalls
  • Drafting a CV and cover letter, building a network, and preparing for job interviews
  • Connecting with organizations that help people with disabilities find an internship or job placement
  • Study choice questions
  • Doubts about your current career and determining a (new) direction as an alumnus

Does your question not appear here? No problem! Schedule an appointment with Jannah Schraven (our career advisor for students with a disability) to see if we can help you further.

  • First meeting: During the first meeting, we discuss your questions. Sometimes, one conversation is enough. If more guidance is needed, we will schedule a follow-up meeting.
  • Tailored support: Based on the first meeting, we will determine together what kind of support is appropriate. This may involve an individual trajectory, participation in one of our workshops, or a combination of both. In some cases, we may refer you to another type of student support or an external contact, such as a study advisor, student counsellor, or external agency.
