Neighbourhood, Sustainable Living and Care in Schiebroek

Improving future prospects for housing and care for older people in Schiebroek

What are we researching?

We investigate the changing needs of ageing residents of Schiebroek, a district of Rotterdam, to live independently for longer. The aim of this research is to improve the future prospects for older people in terms of housing and care.

How does our research make an impact?

This research is of great importance given the demographic developments in Schiebroek. The residents are given the opportunity to tell how they experience their environment and what changes they would like to see. By gathering different perspectives, we will get a more complete picture of the community and what facilities are needed. Based on this knowledge, institutions, such as the municipality and care providers, can deploy more efficient and effective interventions. The new interventions will also change how residents experience and value their neighbourhood. To keep a close eye on neighbourhood developments, we will carry out annual monitoring.

How do we conduct research?

The bottom-up, value-free approach with a focus on residents and their needs makes this research unique. We start with residents and interview them without normative views. By continuing to ask about causes and consequences of certain manifestations with an open mind, we can make connections and recognise patterns. The sum of all these individual causal diagrams provides a good picture of needs at the neighbourhood level. Annual monitoring contributes to a dynamic picture of demand and improving the future prospects for older people in terms of housing and care.
