The Prometheus Game: Immersive Playable Case Study Platform (RSM & ESHPM)

Game-Based Learning
Prometheus game

The Prometheus Game transforms traditional case studies into engaging, interactive decision-making simulations. It immerses students in branching case narratives, where they can interact with learning material, collaborate, debate, make challenging decisions, rewind to explore different decisions, and reflect on the outcomes.

About the game

Static case studies often lose relevance over time, become predictable with repeated use, and can now be quickly analyzed by generative AI. In contrast, the role-playing nature of the Prometheus Game ensures each session is unique. Students create personal interpretations of the game’s narratives, shaped by team dynamics and iterative reflection cycles.

Currently, the game operates as a web-based platform optimized for smartphones but also accessible via personal computers. No downloads or sign-ins are required, and it does not collect personal or academic data.

With the Prometheus game, educators collaborate with learning innovation teams to adapt new case studies into Prometheus Game versions. Each new verions follows a specific case study and a unified narrative structure. Since 2023, two versions of the game, Deal Hero and Katendrecht MC, have been implemented, training over 1,600 students annually at the RSM and ESHPM faculties. Scientific research conducted on the Deal Hero 2024 implementation resulted in a published paper in the IATED journal.

The Prometheus game and its 2 versions are currently in a proof-of-concept stage. The game is therefore not open for access, and it is only implemented in a few courses and programs from the RSM and ESHPM faculties.

Objectives

  • Experience the narrative individually or as a team.
  • Navigate real-world-inspired challenges in negotiation and management.
  • Make impactful decisions influencing the game’s world, budget, and stakeholder relationships.
  • Reflect on decisions, outcomes, and lessons learned.
  • Replay to explore 15 possible endings.

Game mechanics

  • Players: 4-5 players per game
  • Location: any room with tables and enough chairs for each game table
  • Duration: 90 minutes

For course coordinators:

  • Select a case study you want to bring to life for your students.
  • Share the case study content and related learning material to the Prometheus game developers.
  • Have the content reformatted in collaboration with the developers to fit the game’s narrative flow and branching structure.
  • Implement the content in the Prometheus game platform.
  • Name your new Prometheus game version with a fun title and customize the branding to align with your school or faculty.
  • Test the game with students from your school or TAs from your course.
  • Onboard the game facilitators using the facilitator’s slidedeck.
  • Protect your new game version with a password and have your students enjoy the game.
  • Allocate 90 minutes for gameplay in small teams of 4-5 students.
  • Share game access via a QR code.
  • Conduct breakout sessions, followed by a plenary reflection session.

  • Players first get an introduction about the game
  • They are introduced to the life, narrative, routine and challenges of the main story character.
  • They are later introduced to the in-game Day 1, during which they receive an assignment with information of their main stakeholders and their conflicting proposals.
  • After studying the stakeholder proposals, they must support one of the four proposals and reject the rest. They will have to deal with consequences from their decision, manage their stakeholder relationships and balance their budget wisely.
  • Day 1 concludes with a reflection exercise after their decision is made.
  • Day 2 follows the same structure and build upon the decisions made during Day 1
  • The students get a final result after Day 2 with an ending narrative and a results overview.
  • Students are then invited to reflect about their in-game decisions, the consequences and the lessons from navigating the Playable Case Study.

  • The Prometheus game and its 2 versions are currently in a proof-of-concept stage. The game is therefore not open for access, and it is only implemented in a few courses and programs from the RSM and ESHPM faculties.
  • There is interest on making a game spinoff for Canvas LMS.
  • The game currently serves as a training ground for around 1700 students per year.
  • Aims to create a centralized system for educators to bring case studies to life
  • Target user groups: EUR educators, course coordinators, event facilitators.
