Global crisis and disaster support for students and staff

What can the university do for you?
Erasmus Building on Campus Woudestein.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is a diverse community; we have more than 30,000 students and nearly 4,000 staff who reflect our international and multicultural environment. Consequently, a crisis in the world, be it a natural disaster, political conflict or pandemic, often affects a group within our university.

We want to be an engaged organisation, caring for each other and for the well-being of individuals and groups within our community. We always consider the potential impact within our community in the event of a crisis or disaster. If we consider that this is potentially high, we act from the Core Team acute crisis areas using an established protocol to the specific circumstances, always seeking dialogue and connection.

That said, even in other cases, we understand the impact a disaster or crisis can have on students and staff. It is therefore good to know what the university can do for you in that case.

Students

Do you need a listening ear? Are you looking for fellow students who are in a similar situation? Or would you like professional help? As a student, you can always contact one of the student advisers of your study programme. You can also drop in at the Living Room or find out about other possibilities on the online Student Welfare Platform.

Staff

As an employee, the first place to turn to is, of course, your supervisor.

You can also use OpenUp, where you can speak to a psychologist for free, about something small or something big.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the event of a crisis or disaster abroad, the acute crisis areas core team maps whether and, if so, which students and staff are in the crisis area. From the university, we then seek contact. Let friends, family and the university know how you are doing and, if possible, find a safe haven. Check what options are available from your place of residence to leave the area safely.

If you are not already using the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Information Service, visit Nederlandwereldwijd.nl and download the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Travel App. You will then be informed about the latest developments and receive advice. Moreover, it is important that the Ministry knows who is staying in that area.

Need to speak to someone at Erasmus University urgently? Then call the emergency number: +31 (0)6 408 47 882 (24/7).

Students

Are you in a crisis area and on exchange with a partner university? Then contact your faculty's exchange coordinator (link to list) and your host institution's international office. Let us know how you are doing, how best to reach you, and if you need help.
Are you in a crisis area and there for an internship? If so, contact your internship coordinator or possibly your faculty's exchange coordinator. Let us know how you are doing, how we can best reach you, and if you need help.

Staff

If you are in a crisis area and have questions, always contact your supervisor so that they know where you are and how you are doing. If you have additional questions, you can send an email to HR International. If you want to speak to someone besides your manager, you can use the emergency number that has been set up for students.

Erasmus University Rotterdam's emergency fund can support you if you are an EUR student and your study progress is jeopardised by financial hardship. We can provide you with financial support that allows you to temporarily support yourself in the Netherlands (not for tuition fees, nor for study materials).

We understand that you are worried about a war or crisis and may have mental symptoms as a result.

Students

You can contact our student psychologists, and/or consult the EUR student welfare platform.

Need to take a break or need a listening ear? Then drop by The Living Room. You can just walk in, no need to make an appointment. There is always a host present (a student) to welcome you. Activities are also regularly organised to boost your well-being and personal development.

Staff

As an employee, you can use OpenUp, where you can speak to a psychologist for free, about something small or something big.

To find the available support service that fits you best depending on your needs and desires, have a look at the webpages of the Student Wellbeing Platform.

Process and core team

There is a core team during crises. In each crisis, the team considers whether only those directly affected should be approached, or whether wider communication is needed. The team works according to the protocol 'Students and staff from acute crisis areas'.
