In 2020 Russia’s chief opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with Novichock nerve agent, falling ill on a plane. After lengthy negotiations he was evacuated in critical condition to a hospital in Germany. Navalny not only survived the poisoning but returned to Russia shortly after recovery where he was arrested at passport control in Moscow airport and imprisoned in a Russian gulag with almost no possibility of contacting the outside world. Was the Kremlin involved in this poisoning? Was Navalny a threat to Putin’s totalitarian aims? Should Navalny have stayed in Germany to coordinate opposition from there?

In the documentary NAVALNY, director Daniel Roher gives us an insight into the mind of the opposition leader. In close collaboration with an investigative journalist from Bellingcat, Christo Grozev, several news outlets, and his very own team, Navalny tries to find evidence on who is responsible for his poisoning. The film will be introduced by Dr Rashid Gabdulhakov who performed extensive fieldwork in Russia and saw with his own eyes how the country has changed over the past years.

Dr Rashid Gabdulhakov is an assistant professor at the Research Centre for Media and Journalism Studies at the University of Groningen, where he researches social media harms and benefits. Between 2017 and 2021 Dr Gabdulhakov extensively studied citizen-led justice in Russia where some groups such as Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation rely on social media to expose state leaders. This work resulted in groundbreaking insights on surveillance and control mechanisms employed by the Kremlin amid citizen-led resistance.
