Professor Vincent Blok recently published the book ‘A new meaning of life’, in which Blok explains philosophical ideas and themes from eighty novels. The book was published in June by Uitgeverij Noordboek.
Novels can serve as a guide in a tilting world, Blok argues. They throw us off balance, encourage us to think and act, and help us navigate a world that seems to have been whacked out of balance due to climate change and political instability. Blok reads works by Turgenev, Houellebecq, Williams, and many other (early) modern and contemporary authors, and in such a way that they shed new light on what a meaningful life is in the present time, and what the role of art and literature is in this.
Professor Vincent Blok was appointed professor of Philosophy of Data Science and AI at the Erasmus School of Philosophy in June. In his part-time position, Blok, together with colleagues and students, studies the philosophical, ethical and social aspects of data science, artificial intelligence, the circular economy and climate change.
