Interview with Andreea

What our students say

My name is Andreea, I am 23 years old, and I come from Romania. Currently, I am finalising my Masters in Data Science and Marketing Analytics at Erasmus School of Economics, where I previously obtained my Bachelor degree in Economics and Business Economics with a major in Marketing.

Why did you choose this study programme?

I chose to study Data Science and Marketing Analytics as I was interested to explore the Marketing field from a quantitative perspective.

I was always interested in the way a business promotes their services or products and how they evolve their communication based on all the insights that they gather through analysing data. I got a short introduction to the Marketing field through my Bachelor major, and I was fascinated! That is when I knew I would like to have a career in marketing. Moreover, I love numbers and I believe that working with numerical values gives you a higher level of certainty when taking decisions for the future of your company as it is derived from what consumers really think and do. Nevertheless, data science is still considered an open field when it comes to gathering knowledge and for me this imposed a challenge that I was ready to take.

Nevertheless, the combination between my passion for marketing and the challenge that data science imposed made it the suitable step in my career.

What is your favorite subject and/or favorite teacher?

My favorite subject is Introduction to Programming as I had the opportunity to gather essential information on how to utilize and interpret different pieces of information from R to better understand the problem at hand. Moreover, it felt like a complete journey as we started learning the programming language from scratch and the professor acted as a great guide in understanding different tools and explaining more in depth everything that was not obvious on a first glance. The information was based on different data sets which gave us a wide perspective on how to apply the tools on fields other than marketing. This is also an essential course for the rest of the master that you take in the first Block of the Master.

What is the most interesting you learned so far?

The most interesting side of data science applied in marketing that I learned so far is its relevance for companies and their decision- making process. In Block 3 we had the opportunity to work with different companies and their data to help them understand and improve the way they look at data provided by their customers. For example, together with my team I worked on data provided by Feyenoord that led us to come up with several recommendations related to improving the way they target their consumers through emails.

What is your favorite study-break spot on campus?

My favorite study- break spot on campus is definitely the area around Paviljoen especially when there is sunny. It is so nice to spend some time outside and detach from everything you left behind in the library, take some breaths of fresh air and return back to studying more energetic than ever!

What is your best tip for doing fun things in Rotterdam?

My best tip to doing fun things in Rotterdam is to be open-minded. Enjoy everything you do and do not be afraid to be curious. Join social events organized by various student organisations and associations because there is the place to be. They will provide you with many opportunities to meet like- minded people that will soon become your friends for life!
