Kostas Skliamis heeft een PhD in Criminologie van de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn achtergrond is in politieke wetenschappen (BSc & MSc). Zijn promotieonderzoek richtte zich op de invloed van drugsbeleid op stigmatisering en normalisering van cannabisgebruik en op de rol van protest bij cannabisnormalisering. Tijdens zijn promotieonderzoek onderzocht hij verschillende aspecten van sociaal drugsonderzoek zoals cannabismarkten, druggebruik settings en zelfreguleringsregels door het uitvoeren van een innovatief mixed-method onderzoek naar cannabisfestivals in vier Europese landen en een kwantitatief onderzoek in Nederlandse coffeeshops met deelnemers van zeven verschillende nationaliteiten. Daarnaast heeft hij verschillende andere studies uitgevoerd op het gebied van drugs, zoals 'sociaal aanbod en cannabis huisdealers', 'voetbal ultra's, identiteit en drugs' en 'koloniaal opiumbeleid in Zuidoost-Azië'. Zijn passie voor stadssociologie bracht hem naar UPT om onderwerpen te onderzoeken over stedelijke transitie in het tijdperk van postkapitalisme.
