Step-by-step
Step 1
Make a list of stakeholders (these can be groups of people with a specific interest or background, or individual authors, actors, actives, etc.)
Step 2
Divide the students into small groups (3-5) and assign each group a specific stakeholder.
Step 3
In their groups, students follow the following steps:
a. open miro.com,
b. open a new board.
c. select the 'EMPATHY MAP' template (red-green version).
d. Imagine what it is like to be the stakeholder assigned to you.
e. In 10-15 min, fill in the four quadrants (hears, thinks and feels, sees, says and does) of the map appropriate to the stakeholder.
f. Take 3-5 min to identify the aspects that represent gains or losses from the stakeholders' perspectives and fill in the red and green boxes.
Step 4
Reflect with the group using these questions: - What insights did the empathy map give? What assumptions did you make that deserve further investigation? - What gaps in your knowledge do you have? - Did the assignment change your perspective? Why or why not and how?
Variation 1
This list can also be made with students.
Variation 2
If the lesson is physical, the chart can be made on a whiteboard or flap with post-its.
Tip 1
Reflection can take place in a plenary discussion, or as a JigSaw, or in a Silent Wall discussion.
