dr. AW (Awee) Prins

Biography

Awee Prins (1957) is associate professor in the philosophy of man and culture at Erasmus School of Philosophy. Since 2014 he is also dean of the Erasmus Honours Academy.

Dr. Prins studied Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Amsterdam and graduated in 1985. Since 1985 he has taught Phenomenology, Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Art at Erasmus University.

His research focuses on Philosophy and Literature, and on the work of Martin Heidegger. In 2007 he obtained his PhD at Erasmus University with a dissertation on the phenomenon of Boredom (Being Bored / Dutch: Uit Verveling), which became a public and academic ‘bestseller’; in 2009 the eighth edition was published.

In 1991 Awee Prins co-founded (together with Henk Oosterling) the Centre for Philosophy and Art at Erasmus University. From 1999 until 2010, Prins was Dean of Education at the Faculty of Philosophy. He was also the ‘founding father’ of the Erasmus Honours Programme, a programme for excellent EUR-students.

In 2006 he received the prestigious Education Award (Onderwijsprijs) from EUR, for his excellent teaching skills and for being an inspiration for philosophy students, and those of other EUR-departments.
