Erasmus University Rotterdam will remain a core partner of the Rotterdam. Make it Happen brand alliance for the next five years. Last month, the ceo’s of the seven alliance partners - Municipality of Rotterdam, Port of Rotterdam Authority, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam Partners, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam Topsport and Rotterdam Festivals - signed a new covenant at a festive meeting, extending the cooperation through 2029.
On behalf of the EUR, rector magnificus Jantine Schuit was present. On stage, she was accompanied by Robert Simons, alderman for the Port, Economy, Hospitality and Governance, and the ceo of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Boudewijn Siemon, among others.
10 years of successful collaboration
Ten years ago, these organisations joined forces to put Rotterdam more firmly on the map nationally and internationally. The alliance has since grown into a powerful network of more than 40 leading Rotterdam companies and organisations. A unique partnership that has contributed significantly to the international profiling and branding of Rotterdam as an attractive, innovative city. As a ‘Living Lab for the World’, with the profiling themes being: a smart, healthy, vibrant and circular city. This joint effort contributes to Rotterdam being a city that is attractive not only to its inhabitants, but also to entrepreneurs, students, conference visitors and tourists from the Netherlands and abroad.
Engaged university
Engaged university For Rector Magnificus Jantine Schuiten, it was a nice first meeting with many partners from the city. She was asked about the importance of the brand alliance for EUR's ambition to be an engaged university. 'An "engaged university" is a university that is not only academically excellent, but also actively connects with society and collaborates intensively with social partners and businesses on solutions to the big challenges of our time, such as climate change, inequality, security and digitalisation. EUR scientists have - even more than now - a view of the outside world to give shape to our mission to generate positive societal impact.
In our education, we ensure that students not only study the world, but also learn how to make a difference in it. Partnerships and networks like the Rotterdam. Make It Happen. brand alliance play an important role here. Brand partners help us bridge the gap between theory and practice. By collaborating with businesses, governments and civil society organisations, we can formulate more relevant research, put research results directly into practice, and our students get the chance to work on real issues. These partnerships create synergy that strengthens both our education and research, and allow us as a university to make a real difference for Rotterdammers and the rest of the world. It is not without reason that connection and entrepreneurship are two core values of the university.'
The meeting looked back at the successes of the past 10 years. The plenary programme also offered an inspiring talk by architect and founding partner of Mecanoo, Francine Houben, in which she reflected on the city and its future.
