Thomas Peeters, sports economist and Associate Professor at Erasmus School of Economics, was featured in a Parool article. This article reviewed Ajax's loss of millions of euros.
Ajax's annual figures were recently released for the past year. These showed a loss of 9.8 million euros. However, Thomas Peeters indicates that this is not that bad. Ajax can absorb this, according to him, since the club is in good financial shape compared to many other clubs. Peeters indicates that the loss was mainly due to many missed European premiums and the smaller turnover from merchandise.
Peeters also looks at revenues, which were still quite good last year. In addition, he emphasizes that there may be a worse year now and then, which will be compensated in the better times. Yet Ajax also has many uncertainties in the coming year. After all, the club has not qualified for the Champions League. Also, the European Court of Justice will rule next week in a case that could lead to much smaller transfer fees. However, nothing about these risks is included in the annual financial report, something that, according to Peeters, is similar to any other club.
