View our online exhibition Invitation to the Voyage: illustrated books from around 1900 as tourist souvenirsWith beautifully illustrated books from the collection of the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet and the University Library, from art nouveau book covers to a very special handmade travel guide.
At the end of the 19th and early 20th century, travelers did not yet bring their own cameras on a journey, which is one reason they often bought travel books about their destination to take home as souvenirs. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was much reflection on our travel behavior as a luxury that we sometimes took for granted, and as a habit with harmful consequences for our planet. Fortunately, for the reader or bibliophile, a voyage is always within arm's reach.
This exhibition can also be seen in the showcases of the University Library, next to the open collection of the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet on the ground floor.
