The value of the university in times of online learning

CLI Research Projects

With his research project, Daniel van Dijk (ESSB) aims to explore the value of the university in an age of increased online learning. This project is partly funded by the Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI). On this page, you can learn more about the project.

This project investigates to what extent the growing adoption of online learning impacts the raison d’être of the university. Specifically, we focus on the value of the university as a location-based, physical entity where students and teachers meet, in relation to the flexible and unbound possibilities regarding time and space offered by online learning and teaching. From an educational-philosophical perspective, it is explored what constitutes academic training at a university and whether and how this requires a physical presence at a traditional university campus or can be (partly) provided by an online learning environment with digital and asynchronous teaching activities. Together, the projects provide valuable insights into the optimal balance between online and campus-based academic teaching and learning.
