With his research project, Floris Kervers (ESSB) aims to gain a deeper understanding of and improve the design of online learning activities in higher education. This six-year project (2024-2030) is partly funded by the Community for Learning & Innovation (CLI). On this page, you can learn more about the project.
In recent years, higher education has seen a transformation from traditional campus-based teaching with in-person learning activities like lectures or workgroups to online learning activities (e.g., knowledge clips) where students can learn autonomously at any location or time. In this relatively new form of education, it remains challenging to ensure sufficient active learning. To combat passive learning, teachers can implement online learning activities which engage the student through, for example, student collaboration or interactive learning material such as videos with embedded questions. The aim of this project is to develop a better understanding of how the design of online learning materials and/or activities can be optimized to ensure active learning.
About Floris Kervers
Floris Kervers has studied at Erasmus University Rotterdam for both his bachelor’s (Psychology) and master’s degree (Psychology track Brain & Cognition). During his studies he always combined psychology with his interests in educational science. His master thesis explored how the relative positions of two mutually dependent information sources (i.e., text and picture) influence the learning performance of students. He will continue his research on learning as head researcher of the project: “Improving the design of online learning activities in higher education”. This project is a collaboration between the Methods & Skills and Educational Sciences teams of ESSB under supervision of Lidia Arends, Marloes Nederhand, and Bjorn de Koning. If there are any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact Floris at: kervers@essb.eur.nl.
