On 6 February, the AlgoSoc X AICON event took place at the AICON Lab currently operating at Innovatiecentrum VONK (Timmerhuis, Municipality of Rotterdam). The day was all about collaboration, dialogue, and forward-looking discussions on the role of AI in a future that drives our society. It brought together researchers from different backgrounds, but with a shared interest: the impact of AI on society.
Full day of interactive workshops fostering valuable discussions
The guided tour by the curators elaborating on the art installations offered an inspiring kick off. VONK, the innovation center of the municipality invited the researchers into their workspace/learning environment, where they offer a wide audience context to experiment with various technological advancements.
In addition, multimedia artist Julia Luteijn shared insights into her work titled 'Kilo-girls', which focuses on biases inherent in AI. She challenged participants to brainstorm interdisciplinary approaches to raise awareness of biases in AI. The AImaginaries workshop - hosted by AiPact researchers - aims to encourage critical thinking about AI use.
Tonka Milošević, PhD Candidate and Erasmus AiPact and AlgoSoc consortium member involved: “I am proud of the organisation of this event. It gave AlgoSoc members a chance to learn from the interdisciplinary and collaborative methods that form the basis of AICON. During the event, participants had the chance to step “out of the box” for a day, thanks to the interesting discussions and workshops on AI. We look back on a successful day that will certainly serve as a start for future valuable collaborations.”
The day brought together researchers from different backgrounds but with similar research interests: the impact of AI on society. They look back on an enriching experience that encouraged collaboration, dialogue, and forward-looking discussions on the role of AI in the future of our society.
Collaboration between AICON and AlgoSoc – a day of transdisciplinary cross-pollination
AlgoSoc - a multi-disciplinary research program combining scientific efforts from 5 Dutch universities (Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Amsterdam, TU Delft, Tilburg University and Utrecht University) - has taken the opportunity to collaborate with AICON.
Our bottom-up approach involving and collaborating with societal stakeholders, creating exchanges with citizens, and key stakeholders from science, but also from industry, the public sector, government, and civil society. This aligns with Algosoc’s dedication to investigating how algorithmic decision-making and AI influence three important areas in society: Health, Justice, and Media.
