AICON LAB opened: what role does Artificial Intelligence play in our city of Rotterdam?

How can the use of AI create new opportunities while minimising potential risks? AI is embedded in society, seen and unseen, and fuelled by human values, perceptions and preferences. Working together, we can build a deeper understanding of the role of AI in our world, and try to answer how we want to shape the present and future. "For AI to be human- and society-worthy, it is important that everyone has a say. Making all minds matter. AICON LAB shows that this is possible and how this can be done." says prof. dr. Moniek Buijzen, founder of  AICON.  

By entering into a dynamic collaboration with the Rotterdam Municipality's innovation centre VONK - an open learning environment where the meaning of technological developments for the city is explored - AICON hopes to highlight the role of AI in society in an accessible and appealing way through artworks created by man and machine. The significance of AI for the city and its residents, and its impact on both our private and working lives, will be explored in the AICON LAB. Visitors are encouraged to engage in dialogue on the subject to discover together a healthy approach to the latest technological developments that is beneficial to all.  

AICON is an initiative of the Erasmus Initiative Societal Impact of AI ('AiPact') of Erasmus University Rotterdam. It is a collective of scientists, students, artists, organisations and residents of the city of Rotterdam.  

From December 1st 2023 to June 1st 2024, there will be an exhibition, dialogues, workshops, presentations and other activities inside and especially outside Erasmus University to visit and experience at AICON LAB. You are welcome from Monday to Thursday from 07.00 to 22.00 and on Friday from 07.00 to 19.00 at innovation centre VONK/Timmerhuis, Halvemaanpassage 90 in Rotterdam.
