Cultuur&Campus celebrates collaboration between education and research at the second edition of Bloemhof Festival

On Saturday June 8th, the team of Cultuur&Campus Putselaan (C&CP) participated in the Bloemhof Festival as programme partner for the second time. With approximately 1500 visitors, including Mayor Aboutaleb, the festival brought a mix of creativity, pleasure, food, and extraordinary encounters to the streets of Feijenoord.

As programme partner of the Bloemhof Festival, Cultuur&Campus Putselaan’s contribution centred on activities at the crossroads of art, education, and sustainability. One of the highlights of this year’s programme was the Fashion Hub, in collaboration with BLEND, Stichting Bruggen Slaan (a local multicultural foundation), and local primary schools, where clothing could be swapped and upcycled. The Fashion Hub was an opportunity to engage with the urgent topic of clothing and textile waste, while also showcasing local talent and creativity in repair and upcycling skills.

C&CP also co-organised a City Bird Quiz, in collaboration with the local bird association ‘Vogelvereniging Vogels en vriendschap’. During the Quiz, participants could share knowledge and their experiences with ornamental birds in the city in an accessible way, while also reflecting on the importance of nurturing biodiversity and nature in Rotterdam. More generally, the Festival was an opportunity to engage and get to know local and socially engaged organisations in a vibrant and diverse part of the city.

The collaboration between Bloemhof Festival and Culture&Campus Putselaan is great example of how education, science and culture can be the foundation for chance encounters, but also a more serious engagement with urgent topics relating to sustainable urban development, in a playful way.

Breakdance Battle

On July 6th, together with Karimoves, a cultural association which offers a variety of activities with an urban character, the Cultuur&Campus Putselaan is co-organising a Dance Battle event at the Hillevliet 90, in Rotterdam South. The event celebrates the inclusion of the sport breaking at the Paris Summer Olympics for the first time. The competition is open to children and adults. The event is embedded in the Hillevliet Festival which includes dance, hip hop, skating, but also food and music.

Cultuur&Campus Putselaan

At the heart of Cultuur&Campus Putselaan is a partnership between four educational institutions in Rotterdam (EUR, Codarts, WdKA, HR), the Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative, and the Municipality of Rotterdam. Since October 2022, they have been collaborating in the context of this EU-funded project, on the developing a new hub at Rotterdam South, where research, education, and social organisations come together, housed in a historic building on the Putselaan. The Cultuur&Campus Putselaan project is funded by the prestigious New European Bauhaus Light Demonstrator fund. Cultuur&Campus Putselaan collaborates with residents from the neighbourhood, local entrepreneurs, (art) education and the Municipality of Rotterdam on creative placemaking (sharing public spaces through cultural programmes), education, culture, and societally engaged research.
