Charity Run: Sporty party with serious earnings

Marleen van Kester, coordinator at the Beadle’s Office, is running in the Erasmus Charity Run for the fourth time this year. On Sunday 10th of April, she will be at the start again for the quarter marathon. "It's really a sports party, the atmosphere is always good," she says.

"I started at the time for my health, to be fit. The quarter marathon was a challenge to live up to and a motivation to continue training," says Marleen van Kester. "I first thought that this would be the last time, because I am getting too old for it, but as the date approaches I start to like it more and more. Besides, I run with a friend who is 70, so I can go on for a while. It's really super fun to take part."

"Gathering at Erasmus University College is very nice, it gives a sense of togetherness. The first time I participated I had a good time, 59 minutes. The last time it was considerably longer, but I am not doing it for a time. I really do it to participate."

Raising money for scholarships

Of course, Marleen is also raising money by taking part in the Charity Run. The money goes to scholarships for students worldwide who do not have the opportunity to study at our university. Last year, for example, Jin-Kyu Daniel Noack started his study International Business Administration through a scholarship. And Atakan Dizarlar is studying Economics and Philosophy with a scholarship from Erasmus Trust Fund.

"Education is so important for people's development," Marleen says of the charity. "Not everyone has the same opportunities to enjoy education. It is a great goal to make education possible for more people through this Charity Run. With this, I contribute my bit."
