On Wednesday, 8 November 2023, Guido Imbens will receive an honory doctorate on the recommendation of Erasmus School of Economics. Imbens, who studied Econometrics at Erasmus School of Economics, is a professor at the prestigious Stanford Graduate School of Business. In 2021, he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences along with his colleague Joshua Angrist for their research in the mid-1990s into the possibility of so-called natural experiments to explain causal connections.
Last year, Guido Imbens, who regularly visits his alma mater, gave a lecture to ambitious students. In this lecture, he began with a short history of econometrics. He talked about the gradual move from randomised control trials towards leveraging sophisticated methods to identify causal effects from observational data. He continued with discussing some famous examples of econometricians identifying causal relationships in observational data.
On Wednesday, 8 November 2023, Imbens is the guest of honour during the 110th Dies Natalis of Erasmus University Rotterdam. From the hands of Professor Dinand Webbink of Erasmus School of Economics, he will receive an honorary doctorate for his groundbreaking work in causal inference.
