The exhibition Publishers of Rotterdam. Episodes from the rich book history of the city features special publications by Rotterdam publishers throughout the centuries. Check out the exhibition in the University Library display cases.
Occasion for the exhibition is the recent publication Rotterdam Boekenstad, the new issue of magazine De Boekenwereld. In this issue, five Rotterdam based heritage libraries present the versatility of Rotterdam’s book history in eleven contributions, with special attention to the heritage collections. This publication was created on the initiative of the Erasmus University Library and the Rotterdamsch Leeskabinet.
Although the city of Rotterdam is not immediately known for publishing, it certainly does have a history of publishing, continuing to this day. For example, think of the Rotterdam publishers Van Waesberge and Reinier Leers (ca. 1700), the many publishers of popular printed matter and children’s books (Bolle, Bredée) and modern publishers such as Brusse, Nijgh & Van Ditmar and Ad. Donker. Come and take a look at Rotterdam's book history throughout three important publishing periods, all with their own characteristics.
Curious yet? This exhibition can be admired in the display cases of the University Library until early 2025. An online exhibition will be published in the beginning of 2025.
